INTRODUCTION
Under California state law, cannabis retailers can open on-site cannabis consumption spaces, with local approval. Some are moving forward (see list below) while others, like Los Angeles and Berkeley, have resisted consumption rooms altogether, as anti-tobacco forces have falsely conflate cannabis smoke with tobacco and show up at local meetings to fight off our rights. Help us make cannabis consumption allowed across California!

NEWS:
Asm. Matt Haney’s Cal NORML-sponsored cannabis café bill AB 1775 has been signed into law and goes into effect on January 1, 2025. It states that a local jurisdiction may allow activities including, but not limited to, selling non-cannabis-infused food, selling nonalcoholic beverages, and selling tickets for live musical or other performances.

4/5/2024 – Weed Doesn’t Smoke the Same Without Others
Opening up new people to the weed lounge experience helps the cannabis freedom cause. The dream is that one day, smoking a joint at a club might be as typical of an experience as ordering a beer at a bar. It certainly would be a lot healthier.
8/15/2023 – Cotati approves first of its kind cannabis lounge
Cotati planner JP Harries said he used two cannabis events at the site as tests for what might be expected when the lounge is operational. “There was simply no odor coming from the event,” Harries said. “As I walked the perimeter, I could actually smell Burger King more than anything.” Mercy is also pairing with researchers at UC San Diego and with the California Highway Patrol to study the effects of cannabis consumption on drivers; all patrons will receive a “Driving High is a DUI” pamphlet.
8/14/2023 – CONSUMPTION COUNTRY: THE VAULT
Owner Rich Eaton says revenues double on bingo Wednesdays, and ticketed events see an even larger return. However, he says, the absence of an in-house kitchen, or even the ability to have a barista, is holding the business back from being truly realized. He says it’s important that regulators understand that cannabis consumers do not parallel alcohol consumers and that these businesses simply need more than what the state is allowing them. “The consumption amount is way less — and I mean, way less — than alcohol,” Eaton says. “With alcohol, you could sit there and drink four or five vodka tonics in the course of two and a half hours, but you’re not going to smoke four joints.”
